About Sakrete Concrete Mix
Sakrete is America's original bagged concrete mix, first developed in 1936. It is widely available at Home Depot, Lowe's, and independent hardware stores across the country. Like other bagged concrete mixes, Sakrete combines Portland cement, sand, and gravel in pre-measured proportions — you add water and mix.
Sakrete offers several formulations for different applications. Their standard concrete mix works for most general-purpose projects. Their 5000 PSI High Strength Concrete Mix is recommended for driveways, footings, and anything that will bear heavy loads. For fence posts and small fills, their Fast-Setting Concrete sets in 20-40 minutes without mixing.
Sakrete vs. Quikrete: Which Should You Use?
Both are excellent products. The practical decision almost always comes down to price and which brand your local store carries in stock. Sakrete tends to be slightly more common in the eastern US, while Quikrete dominates in other regions. The bag sizes, coverage rates, and mixing ratios are nearly identical between the two brands.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How many bags of Sakrete do I need per cubic yard?Approximately 45 bags of 80lb, 60 bags of 60lb, or 90 bags of 40lb Sakrete per cubic yard of concrete.
- Is Sakrete the same as Quikrete? They are competing brands with very similar products. Sakrete (1936) is slightly older than Quikrete (1940). Both perform equivalently for DIY and professional use. Choose whichever is cheaper or more available locally.
- What is the water ratio for Sakrete concrete mix?Sakrete recommends 3 quarts of water per 80lb bag. Always add water gradually and mix thoroughly. Too much water weakens the concrete — the mix should be workable but not soupy.
- How long does Sakrete take to cure?Standard Sakrete reaches initial set in 1-2 hours and can typically be walked on after 24 hours. Full structural strength (28-day cure) takes approximately four weeks. Do not apply loads or vehicles for at least 7 days.
