How to Use This Quote Estimate
This calculator generates a realistic quote range based on regional labor costs and current material prices. Use it to sanity-check contractor quotes — not to replace them. If a contractor quote is 40% below this estimate, ask detailed questions about what's included. If it's 40% above, get more bids.
What a Good Concrete Quote Includes
A complete, itemized concrete slab quote should specify each of the following. If a contractor gives you a single all-in number without a breakdown, ask for line items.
| Line Item | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| Site preparation | Grading, excavation if needed, compacting subgrade |
| Gravel base | 4–6" crushed stone delivered and compacted |
| Forming | Lumber forms set, leveled, and staked |
| Concrete material | Ready-mix at specified PSI + delivery fee |
| Reinforcement | Rebar or wire mesh, installed on chairs |
| Placing + finishing | Screeding, floating, finishing to specified texture |
| Control joints | Saw-cut or hand-tooled joints to control cracking |
| Cleanup | Form removal, haul-away of waste |
| Sealing (optional) | Cure and seal coat — often a separate line item |
Always get 3 quotes. Concrete pricing varies enormously by contractor. A 30–40% spread between the lowest and highest bids on the same project is common. The lowest bid isn't always the best — look at what each quote includes and the contractor's track record.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I get an accurate concrete slab quote?Give contractors exact dimensions, thickness, finish type, and access details. Mention if you need demo of old concrete, if there are underground utilities to avoid, or if the site has difficult access. The more specific you are, the more accurate the quote.
- What should a concrete contractor quote include?A complete quote should itemize: site prep, gravel base, forming, concrete material + delivery, labor, reinforcement, control joint cutting, sealing (if included), and cleanup. Single all-in numbers without a breakdown are a yellow flag.
- When is the cheapest time to have concrete poured?Late fall and winter (October–February) in most regions are slower seasons for concrete contractors. You may get 10–20% lower quotes during this period simply due to reduced demand. Spring and summer are peak season with highest prices and longest wait times for reputable crews.
- What's a fair deposit for a concrete contractor?10–30% upfront is reasonable for scheduling and material procurement. Be cautious of any contractor demanding 50%+ before work begins. Final payment should not be due until the work is complete and you've inspected it.
